Living on the borders of the Western Lakes and little more than a stones throw from the birthplace of William Wordsworth are a flock of free range hens. These birds enjoy stunning views across the Lakeland hillsides.
The farmers
Robbie and Pauline live on a farm which has been on this site since records began in 1657. Their hens roam very well established pastures and are lucky that the ranges have been recently completely covered with tree and shrub plantings for shelter. Robbie and Pauline care deeply for their animals welfare and their impact on the environment. They embracing wholeheartedly the natures Nest Egg philosophy and go much further……
Creating the right environment for birdlife
In conjunction with the North West Farm Tourism Initiative they have set up free public access to a wetland nature reserve on their farm and encourage the public to visit and observe many species of wetland birds from the purpose built hide complete with disabled access.
Planting and wildlife
The hens habitats are being enriched through a program of planting which involves 1000’s of trees on over 50 acres of land used by the chickens to range and explore. There are a number of rare species on the farm including Red Squirrels.
